Our birds
On welfare grounds we are completely Free Range at Rymer Farm, not only for the hens that we care for but we have never had a single egg through the packing station that has come from a caged chicken. The farm is independently audited by both RSPCA Freedom Food and the British Lion Code, the world’s toughest national audit programme against Salmonella.
We have found that our birds range better and are healthier and stronger when they have easy access to plenty of easy working, free draining land. So in recent years we have been developing smaller flocks in fields larger than the bare legal minimum living in mobile hen-houses that we move across the field between flocks.
Our mobile hen houses are fully reliant on renewable energy (both solar and wind) not just to be green but because it makes sound financial sense – we are ever mindful to balance the welfare of our birds with the need to keep down the costs of free range egg production!
